Broken Commandments

The Ten Commandments were God’s standards for right living. To obey them was to obey God. Yet thoughout the Old Tesament, we can see how each commandment was broken. As you read the stories, notice the tragic consequences that occurred as a result of violating God’s law.

Notable Violations

"Do not worship any other gods besides me."

Solomon (1 Kings 11)

"Do not make idols of any kind…You must never worship or bow down to them."

The golden calf-idol incident (Exodus 32); generations after Joshua (Judges 2:10-14; 2 Kings 21:1-15; Jeremiah 1:16)

"Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God."

Zedekiah (Ezekiel 17:15-21)

"Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy."

Judah (2 Chronicles 36:21)

"Honor your father and mother."

Eli's sons—Hophni and Phinehas (1 Samuel 2:12, 23-25)

"Do not murder."

Hazael (2 Kings 8:15)

"Do not commit adultery."

David (2 Samuel 11:2-5)

"Do not steal."

Ahab (1 Kings 21:1-19)

"Do not testify falsely against your neighbor."

Saul (1 Samuel 15:13-25)

"Do not covet your neighbor's wife. Do not covet your neighbor's house or land… or anything else your neighbor owns."
