| Aug.06.01: Light For The Day - "A Lesson From the Birds" -- Psalm 104:17: "There the birds make their nests; the stork has its home in the pine trees." We are all to some measure, I suspect, dissatisfied with our lives. The great majority are always on the fly. They never settle; they never light on any tree to build their nest. They are always fluttering from one tree to another; this tree is not green enough, that one is not beautiful enough, this one is not picturesque enough. They are always on the wing and never build a peaceful nest. Luther compared the Christian’s contentment to a little bird in the tree: he fed himself tonight, but he does not know where tomorrow’s breakfast is. He sits there while the wind rocks the tree; he shuts his eyes and puts his head under his wing and sleeps. When he wakes in the morning, he will sing: Mortals cease from toil and sorrow; God provideth for the morrow. Few can say, “I want nothing else. I want but little here. I am satisfied. I am content.” You who are apprentices are sighing until you become journeymen. You who are journeymen are groaning to be masters. Masters are longing to retire. We are like sailors who never get to port, like arrows that never reach the target. Dear friend, what would your future be if you did not have Christ? Even if it is bitter and dark, it does not matter as long as Christ your Lord sanctifies it and the Holy Spirit gives you courage, energy, and strength. -- Charles H. Spurgeon ------------------ -- Jeremiah 8:7 (NIV) "Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration. But my people do not know the requirements of the LORD." |
