Jan.19.07: Light for the Day - "Let's See The Good!"  (<<)  (>>)

-- Matthew 5:14-16
5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead
they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may
see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

-- 2 Corinthians 5:17
5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come!

Most of the news we read and hear is bad news. Consequently,
it is easy to fall prey to the conclusion that the world we live in is
all bad. But just as evil deeds produce evil results, so good
deeds produce good results. We have both weeds and flowers
in our world. It's much better to see the flowers, though we know
the weeds are present.

God inspires many wonderful people to live beautiful lives and
do kind and loving deeds. Oftentimes, however, much of the
world's beautiful relationships are obscured by the foul things
that are constantly brought to our attention.

Jesus instructs us that we must let our lights shine in order that
our good works may be seen to the glory of the Father in Heaven.
Perhaps God's people are too modest about the good things
they do, thereby robbing God, who inspires us to love and
good works, of the glory which is due Him. The world needs to
see that ordinary men and women live good lives because they
are motivated by their love for Christ. If Christ lives in us, He will
make a big difference, and the world needs to see it! Let's not
hide our light under the bushel of our own self-effacement.
The world needs a refreshing new vision of what God can do
in human lives today.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to show Your compassion and love.

-- James 2:18
2:18 Now someone may argue, "Some people have faith;
others have good deeds." I say, "I can’t see your faith if you
don’t have good deeds, but I will show you my faith through
my good deeds."

-- Galatians 5:22-26
5:22 But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce
this kind of fruit in us: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness,
Goodness, Faithfulness,     5:23 Gentleness, and Self-control.
Here there is no conflict with the law.
5:24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions
and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there.
5:25 If we are living now by the Holy Spirit, let us follow the
Holy Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
5:26 Let us not become conceited, or irritate one another,
or be jealous of one another.

-- Romans 13:10-14
13:10 Love does no wrong to anyone, so love satisfies all of
God’s requirements.
13:11 Another reason for right living is that you know how late it is;
time is running out. Wake up, for the coming of our salvation is
nearer now than when we first believed.
13:12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be
here. So don’t live in darkness. Get rid of your evil deeds.
Shed them like dirty clothes. Clothe yourselves with the armor of
right living, as those who live in the light.
13:13 We should be decent and true in everything we do,
so that everyone can approve of our behavior. Don’t participate
in wild parties and getting drunk, or in adultery and immoral living,
or in fighting and jealousy.
13:14 But let the Lord Jesus Christ take control of you,
and don’t think of ways to indulge your evil desires.

-- 1 Thessalonians 5:5-9
5:6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,
but let us be alert and self-controlled.
5:7 For those who sleep, sleep at night,
and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled,
putting on faith and love as a breastplate,
and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
5:9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive
salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

-- Matthew 13:30
13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will
tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles
to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’

-- 1 Peter 2:9-10
2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him
who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.
2:10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;
once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

-- 1 Peter 4:8-11
4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over
a multitude of sins.
4:9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
4:10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve
others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
4:11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very
words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength
God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through
Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.
Amen.

-- 1 John 1:5-10
1:5 This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you:
God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.
1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not live by the truth.
1:7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
1:8 If we claim to be without sin,
we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us
our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1:10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar
and His word has no place in our lives.

-- 1 John 3:7
3:7 Dear children, let no one deceive you. He who practices
righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

-- John 15:5, 8
15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me
and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.
15:8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit,
showing yourselves to be My disciples.

-- Hebrews 10:22-25; 38-39
10:22 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance
of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty
conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,
for He who promised is faithful.
10:24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward
love and good deeds.
10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit
of doing, but let us encourage one another -- and all the more as
you see the Day approaching.

10:38 But My righteous one will live by faith.
And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.
10:39 But we are not like those who turn their backs on God
and seal their fate. We have faith that assures our salvation. (Hab. 2:3-4)

-- Ephesians 4:21-24
4:21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him in
accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.
4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put
off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.
4:23 Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts
and attitudes.
4:24 You must display a new nature because you are a new person,
created in God’s likeness -- righteous, holy, and true.

-- 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
2:16 May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,
who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement
and good hope,
2:17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in
every good deed and word.

-- Psalms 119:105, 9-11
119:105 Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

119:9 How can young people keep their way pure?
By living according to Your Word.
119:10 I seek You with all my heart;
Do not let me stray from Your Commands.
119:11 I have hidden Your Word in my heart that
I might not sin against You.

-- Psalms 34:11-15
34:11 Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
34:12 Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days,
34:13 keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.
34:14 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous
and His ears are attentive to their cry.

-- Psalms 97:11-12
97:11 Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart.
97:12 Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous,
    and praise His holy name.
