-- John 14:15-17; 26-27 15 If you love Me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever --
17 The Spirit of truth. the world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.
26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Jesus is teaching the disciples about the Holy Spirit, the "Spirit of truth." Translated as "Counselor" or "Comforter," the Greek word literally means "one who comes alongside." So this title pictures one person coming close to another, alongside, to guide (as on a path in the woods), to advise (as a lawyer in a court of law), to counsel (as a psychiatrist or simply a trusted friend), to speak words of concern (as in a hospital room), or to comfort (as at a graveside). Clearly, God sends His Spirit to help all believers. And He counsels and comforts by telling the truth about Jesus, assuring believers of Christ's true identity, forgiveness of sins, love, and salvation. Do you feel lost, wondering which way to turn? You are not alone. The Holy Spirit stands beside you and will guide you God's way. Do you feel accosted and accused? You're not alone. God's Spirit comes to your defense. Do you feel confused, frustrated, anxious, or fearful? You're not alone. The Counselor is with you to give you hope and to tell you how to live. Do you feel devastated by loss and overcome with grief? You're not alone. The Comforter is close, wrapping His arms around you and whispering words of love. -- Dave Veerman -- John 15:26-27 26 When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about Me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with Me from the beginning. -- Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. "We do not need to wait for the Holy Spirit to come: He came on the day of Pentecost. He has never left the church." ~John Stott
"O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams.” ~St. Augustine Every time we say, "I believe in the Holy Spirit," we mean that we believe that there is a Living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it. ~J. B. Phillips By Your Spirit By Your Spirit, speak Words of Life to me That I may live in You And Your Purpose I will see For Your Spirit gives me Life And causes me to be Alive in You forever Eternally set free What profits a man to gain The world and yet not You My soul does yearn to prosper Speak Your Words so true Into a heart that hungers A soul that thirsts for You Your Life restores my spirit Your Life is all that's true My spirit listens Lord And hears what You say A new commandment of Love A new love for today Without Your Words of truth My soul cannot desire The wonder of salvation From He whose name is higher Eternal truths speak forth And take captive my soul Dividing life and death Making me whole By Your Spirit speak Because only You can bring Words that encourage and strengthen In these my soul does sing -- Kerry Lee Harney -- John 16:7-15 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 In regard to sin, because men do not believe in Me; 10 In regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see Me no longer; 11 And in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.
14 He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you.
15 All that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine and make it known to you.
-- Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. -- Acts 2:4 All the believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages (other tongues) as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. -- Acts 8:14-17 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there.
15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these believers to receive the Holy Spirit.
16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
-- Zechariah 4:6 ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty. -- Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. -- Romans 8:26-27 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. -- Romans 8:14-17 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ -- if, in fact, we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. -- Acts 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. -- Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. -- 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit Who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in Words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual Words. -- Titus 3:3-7 3 Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. 4 But -- “When God our Savior revealed His kindness and love, 5 He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 Because of His grace He declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.” -- Galatians 5:22-26 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self–control. There is no law against these things! 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. -- Romans 8:10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. -- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. -- 1 Corinthians 12:13 By One Spirit we were all baptized into One body. Whether we are Jewish or Greek, slave or free, God gave all of us One Spirit to drink. -- Ephesians 4:1-7 1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is One body and One Spirit -- just as you were called to One Hope when you were called -- 5 One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism; 6 One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. -- Romans 8:1-2 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. -- Psalms 51:10-13 10 Create a clean heart in me, O God, and Renew a Faithful Spirit within me. 11 Do not force me away from Your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience. 13 Then I will teach Your ways to those who are rebellious, and sinners will return to You. Watches, cars and Christians can all look chromed and shiny. But watches don't tick, cars don't go and Christians don't make a difference without insides. For a Christian, that's the Holy Spirit. ~Tim Downs Just as a strong wind will blow through an open window and stir things up in a house, the Holy Spirit will blow new life into your church (or your life) if you give Him access. ~ Unknown Do not pray for more of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity and is not in pieces. Every child of God has all of Him, but does He have all of us? ~ F.B. Meyer "If we had the Spirit sealing our ministry with power it would signify very little about talent. Men might be poor and uneducated, their words might be broken and ungrammatical; but if the might of the Spirit attended them, the humblest evangelist would be more successful than the most learned of divines, or the most eloquent of preachers.
.... +++ ..... It is extraordinary power from God, not talent, that wins the day. It is extraordinary spiritual unction not extraordinary mental power, that we need. Mental power may fill a chapel but spiritual power fills the church with soul anguish. Mental power may gather a large congregation. but only spiritual power will save souls. What we need is spiritual power." ~ Chas. H. Spurgeon
"'They continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.' Prayer earnest, prayer united, and prayer persevering, these are the conditions; and, these being fulfilled, we shall assuredly be 'endued with Power from on High.' We should never expect that the Power will fall upon us just because we happen once to awake and ask for it. Nor have any community of Christians a right to look for a great Manifestation of the Spirit, if they are not all ready to join in supplication, and 'with one accord,' to wait and pray as if it were the concern of each one. "It is only by waiting before that throne of grace that we become endued with the Holy Fire; but he who waits there long and believingly will imbibe that Fire, and come forth from his communion with God, bearing tokens of where he has been. For the individual believer, and, above all, for every labourer in the Lord's vineyard, the only way to gain spiritual Power is by secret waiting at the throne of God, for the Baptism. - Wm. Arthur. "About three in the morning as we were continuing instant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us, insomuch that many cried out for exceeding joy, and many fell to the ground. As soon as we recovered a little from the awe and amazement at the presence of His Majesty, we broke out with one voice, 'We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord.' "--John Wesley. -- Jude 1:20-21 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking (waiting) for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
-- Revelation 3:20-22 20 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with Me. 21 To the one who conquers I will give a place with Me on My throne, just as I Myself conquered and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 Let anyone who has an ear Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. |
