Nov 3.97: Light For The Day - "Matt's Legacy"
"Don't let anyone look down on you because you
are young, but set an example for the believers
in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."
-- 1Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

"Matt's Legacy"
Matt Remain didn't like what he saw on his college
campus, so he did something about it. He and some
friends were concerned because fellow students
didn't take their faith seriously enough, so they
formed Cross Bearers. Each week the Cross Bearers
would meet to have pizza, talk about the Bible, and
figure out how to put it into practice in their lives.
Little did Matt know that Cross Bearers would have
to carry on through the entire second semester of
school without him. In January of the year the Bible
study began, Matt suffered head injuries in a car
accident. As the school year wound down, he lay
in a coma in the hospital while his friends gathered
in the groups he had started and prayed for him.
Suppose Matt had just stood by and grumbled about
what he saw on his campus. He could have ignored
it, but he didn't. He took action. He made sure his
friends had a place to go for Bible study. His
continuing legacy of worship, praise, and study
continues. Even after his terrible accident, students
continue to benefit from Matt's dedication to Jesus
Christ. Matt has now come out of his coma and is in
rehabilitation.
We all leave a legacy. Some, like Matt, touch hearts
for good and for God. Some leave behind a vague,
misty legacy--having contributed nothing. Some
leave damage in their wake--messy relationships,
shattered dreams, and disappointed loved ones.
Think about your legacy. How will people remember
you? Will they have respect for your standards?
Will they look fondly at your contributions to your
family, school, church, work, community, ... ?
Our heavenly Father calls on us to make a difference
in what we say, how we live, how we show love, how
we demonstrate our faith, and how we maintain our
purity. Like Matt, let's leave a legacy of ongoing, godly
value.
