Nov 5.98: Light For The Day - "A Word to the Wise"

Be wise enough to learn from the wisdom of others.
-------------------
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man listens to advice."
-- Proverbs 12:15

---------------

When H. Jackson Brown Jr. sent his son off to
college, he gave him some suggestions, which were
later published in Life's Little Instruction Book.
Here's a sampling of his advice:

- Accept a breath mint if someone offers you one.
- Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
- When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.
- Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.
- Phone home if you're going to be more than 20
minutes late.
- Trust in God, but lock your car.

Quite a few years ago, another father gave some
advice to his son. He's also a published author.
His advice was included in a book called Proverbs.
Here's some of Solomon's advice for his son:

"Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do
not forsake your mother's teaching." (Proverbs 1:8).

"My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to
them" (1:10).

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on
your own understanding" (3:5).

"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the
wellspring of life" (4:23).

"Keep corrupt talk far from your lips" (4:24).

Yes, parents have been advising their children for
centuries. And for centuries, their children have been
blowing it off, thinking their parents are out of touch.

Each generation believes its experiences are unique.
Some certainly are, but many common elements exist.
When a parent doles out advice, he's actually
providing a little inside information--because he's
been there--he's done it--he knows.

So, next time Dad and Mom start with their little tips
on how to live your life--give it a chance. They just
might know what they're talking about.

Hey, one more word of advice--call home this weekend.
